Parkdale is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 23 km south-east from Melbourne’s central business district. It is situated between the suburbs of Mentone and Mordialloc, and is located on the Frankston Metropolitan train line. Its local government area is the City of Kingston. Parkdale was founded in 1920, and named for early homesteader William Parker when engineers decided to build a railway station alongside a cluster of five bayside shops. Parkdale Post Office opened on 6 January 1921.

Parkdale’s local library, Kingston Library, is located on Parkers Road adjacent to Parkdale Station. Parkdale is also a noted beach-side suburb, with the beach a 5-minute walk from the station. Parkdale is accessible by a number of Public Transport Victoria bus routes servicing the area. The 903 bus service from Mordialloc passes through Parkdale along Beach road. The 708 bus from Carrum to Hampton station stops at Parkdale railway station. This train line services the area via Parkdale Station, located on the Frankston Line, operating in Zone 2.

Woodlands golf club

The suburb has an Australian Rules football team competing in the Southern Football League. Golfers play at the course of the Woodlands Golf Club on White Street, Mordialloc. The Epsom Park Horse Racing track was situated in Mordialloc. Now a housing estate, in its heyday at the beginning of the 20th century it was one of Victoria’s premier race tracks. Later in life it became a training track before being eventually closed in the 1980s. In 2008, Doug Denyer Reserve, situated in Epsom Park hosted it first ever cricket season with Mordialloc Redbacks being the home team, Redbacks being a part of the Mordialloc Cricket Club. The Redbacks first Junior Head Coach at Epsom Park was David Beckett.

Mentone is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 21 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district.[2] Its local government area is the City of Kingston. It is known locally for Mentone Beach, which extends alongside Beaumaris Bay from the cliffs in Beaumaris and ends at Warrigal Road where it meets Parkdale. Mentone is associated with the Heidelberg School of Australian artists.

Mentone is home to a lively shopping area along Como Parade West, Balcombe Road and surrounding streets and laneways. This shopping strip offers a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, clothing stores, supermarkets, travel agents, fancy dress, craft, home, book stores and more. A second commercial area has grown along Nepean Highway; this may expand as the former Nylex factory site between Nepean Highway and Warrigal road is redeveloped into a bulky goods retail precinct. Neighbouring suburb, Cheltenham, comprises one of the biggest shopping centres in Australia – Westfield Southland. This shopping mall crosses the six lanes of Nepean Highway. It is the main shopping centre for people of Mentone and surrounds. A new train station will open on the west side of Southland adjoining Bay Street in 2017.

The Mentone Beach and Mentone Lifesaving Club provide leisure space and activities, as do the parkland and oval near the council offices. Mentone is also home to numerous sporting clubs including cricket, football, tennis, swimming, field hockey, and lawn bowling. Mentone Bowling Club was established in the early 1900s and has a successful history, including an Australian champion. The club is next to the train station in the centre of the suburb. Mentone were promoted to the Premier Division in 2010.

Patterson Lakes is located in outer south-east Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. The canal suburb is located 35 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government area is the City of Kingston. Patterson Lakes consists predominantly of new houses, and is home to the most popular boat launching facilities in Victoria. The Patterson River is a popular portal for Port Phillip. It includes four public launching ramps; joins the Tidal Canal system to Port Phillip; and includes the Patterson Lakes Marina and its facilities in Middle Harbour and Inner Harbour.

Patterson Lakes is serviced by the following shopping complexes: Lakeview Shopping Centre, Harbour Plaza Shopping Town & Medical Centre, Gladesville Shopping Centre and The Glade. Patterson Lakes is serviced by the Carrum Railway Station on the Frankston Line operated by Metro Trains Melbourne. Access to the area by road is from the Nepean Highway, EastLink, Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Peninsula Link. Patterson Lakes has freeways at its door-step with a travel time to the CBD of 30–35 minutes. Patterson Lakes is accessible by a number of Metlink bus routes servicing the area, which includes the 857 and 708.

Other landmarks of Patterson Lakes include Wannarkladdin Wetlands, Patterson River and Eel Race Drain (later becomes Kananook Creek.) Patterson Lakes Marina has facilities at the Town Centre (Inner Harbour), Runaway Bay (Middle Harbour) and Whaler’s Cove (Western Harbour.) Patterson River is managed by Parks Victoria. The Tidal Canal system and the Quiet Lakes are managed by P.L.A.C (Patterson Lakes Advisory Committee) and Melbourne Water.

Carrum

Carrum is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 33 km (21 mi) south-east from Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government area is the City of Kingston. Public schools in Carrum include Patterson River Secondary College and Carrum Primary School.

The Carrum Cricket Club was established in 1978 with its home ground in the heart of Carrum, in Graham Rd. The cricket club has won 16 senior Premierships since, initially in the FDCA and more recently in the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA). Carrum Football Club had a proud History from 1911 until it folded due to Financial issues in 1996. The Carrum Lions club colours were originally blue and gold, players wore a blue jumper with a gold yolk, this was later change to the Fitzroy Maroon and Blue with a CFC and a Lion on the Jersey.

Radio Carrum is a Community Internet Radio Station Broadcasting a variety of unique programs based around the Carrum area. Popular shows include; AFL Gurus, Carrum Cricket Club Show, Friday Night Frothies and The Other Guys. The whole purpose of the station is to allow inspired people to present their findings, passions and obsessions.

Chelsea

Chelsea is a bayside suburb of Melbourne, located between Edithvale and Bonbeach. The beach at Chelsea consists of a straight and uninterrupted stretch of coastline, providing scenic views southwards to the Mornington Peninsula. A no boating zone is declared at a 300 metre length of coastline around local surf life saving club, making this area ideal for safe swimming in the sheltered bay waters. A little further south is a short pier which extended into the sea. The foreshore along the beach consists of low sand dunes with groups of colourful bathing boxes situated in native coastal grasses overlooking the water.

The commercial centre of Chelsea is primarily based along the Nepean Highway which runs parallel to the coast. On the eastern side of the highway is a railway line, community buildings and residential areas. The western side of the highway is mainly lined with shops, and behind them is a thin strip of housing which borders the coastal foreshore. A number of parks and recreational facilities can be found in Chelsea. Victory Park overlooks the beach, located at the end of The Strand and has BBQ facilities and a playground. The Chelsea Bicentennial Park, at the corner of Thames Promenade and Scotch Parade, provides sporting facilities and walking tracks through bushland.

Chelsea Heights is a residential neighbouring suburb of Chelsea, extending eastwards to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. As well as housing, it is home to part of the extensive Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands system which is well known for its prolific bird life. A walking and cycling track runs along the edge of the wetlands and there are elevated viewing platforms in two of the car parks found along Edithvale Road. At Chelsea Heights are a number of commercial precincts. There is a small local shopping centre located on Thames Promenade, west of Wells Road. At the junction of Wells Road and Springvale Road is a hotel complex and fast food outlets.

Edithvale is best known for its long beach of pure white sand and historic bathing boxes. Residents groups have set up the Kingston Boatshed Association to protect these historic treasurers originally constructed by their owners for family activities such as swimming and fishing. The waters of Port Phillip Bay provide an excellent reflection as the sun sets directly facing the shore.

Today large houses are being built on the absolute beach frontages which are highly sought after. Pre-war this area was popular with Melbourne city residents who caught the train down on a hot Sunday and swam at Edithvale lifesaving club with its pier. Commonly caught fish in the area include Flathead and Garfish, as well as Flounder which can be taken with a hand spear. Dolphins have been seen swimming 100 metres from shore and small fish fingerlings breed in the shallows.

The town in conjunction with neighbouring suburb Aspendale has an Australian Rules football Edithvale-Aspendale team competing in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. Golfers play at the Australasian Golf Club’s Chelsea Public Golf Course on Fraser Avenue.

Bonbeach

Bonbeach Primary School

Bonbeach is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 31 km south-east from Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government area is the City of Kingston. Bonbeach Post Office opened on 19 November 1922 (closing in 1923, then reopening in 1926 on the opening of the railway station) and finally closing in 1985.

Bonbeach has a railway station on the Frankston line and a string of shops on the Nepean Highway. A long stretch of white sand beach on Port Phillip extends from Chelsea southwards to the Patterson River. The town has an Australian Rules football team competing in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. Golfers play at the course of the Patterson River Country Club alongside the river. Bonbeach has a school called Bonbeach Primary School. The Bonbeach Lifesaving Club has been running for 75 years. The Bonbeach Railway Station was used during the filming of a scene in the Australian television series Kath & Kim.
